Washington, Nov 4, 2026 13:32 ISTRepublican candidate Bo French has conceded defeat to Democrat Jon Rosenthal in the contest for Texas Railroad Commissioner following intense backlash over social media posts that drew widespread accusations of racism.
Rosenthal claimed victory after French acknowledged his defeat on Tuesday night, though official final tallies remain pending. The outcome represents a major political upset that shatters decades of total Republican oversight of the oil and gas regulatory body.
French's campaign drew heavy scrutiny in September after he shared a photo from a Texas university gathering that featured a crowd of predominantly South Asian individuals, which included Indian attendees. In an accompanying online post, French stated that he had heard university graduation looked like that and remarked that the problem was much worse than anyone had imagined. In a separate post on the same day, he compared social media exposing the displacement of Americans by foreigners to body cameras catching criminals.
Those comments provoked sharp online condemnation globally, including from observers in India. In his concession statement, French acknowledged that the evening did not go the way his campaign had anticipated. He expressed gratitude to his backers, emphasizing their dedication, friendship, and affection for the state of Texas.
The Texas Railroad Commission is responsible for managing the state's massive oil and gas sector, supervising operations such as drilling, pipeline networks, natural gas infrastructure, oilfield waste management, and the plugging of inactive wells.
French's decision to step aside paved the way for Rosenthal to secure the election victory, even as final results continued to be compiled.
