Google has maintained its status as the undisputed leader of internet search for decades, serving as the default destination for virtually any online query. However, the arrival of the artificial intelligence era has introduced direct conversational answers that bypass the need to scroll through pages of search engine optimization links and websites. As user habits shift toward greater convenience, a growing number of people are reportedly relying on ChatGPT for information instead of using traditional search engines.
Recent figures highlight this rapid adoption. Adam Fry, who leads consumer products for ChatGPT, revealed in a discussion for the Big Technology newsletter that the chatbot's volume of search-like queries has climbed to approximately 20 percent of Google's total search volume. Fry also noted that the platform expanded its weekly active user base from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in just two months, capturing an additional 200 million users during that timeframe.
The growing appetite for AI-driven search aligns with findings from a Pew Research Center survey, which indicated that gathering information is the primary use case for AI chatbots among American adults. Approximately 42 percent of surveyed respondents reported using artificial intelligence for this specific purpose, while 38 percent of employed adults cited work-related tasks as their main application. The survey also underscored ChatGPT's strong market position, showing that 44 percent of American adults had used ChatGPT, compared to 24 percent who had experimented with Google Gemini.
According to Fry, users are increasingly consulting ChatGPT regarding people, locations, and various subjects that demand up-to-date data. People are also leveraging the tool for sensitive and complex topics such as personal finance and health, where current information is critical. He characterized these inquiries as the exact types of questions that users historically brought to search engines but are now redirecting to the conversational assistant.
Despite these gains, Google continues to command a massive market share, handling an estimated 5 trillion searches annually. Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai has previously suggested that the expansion of AI chatbots does not inherently threaten Google's core business, describing the digital landscape as far from a zero-sum game. Alphabet executives have similarly drawn parallels to how video platforms like YouTube continued to expand even after the explosive growth of competitors like TikTok.
At the same time, traditional search experiences have faced persistent criticism from users frustrated by pages cluttered with search-optimized content, which can obscure genuine recommendations and trustworthy information. This friction has previously driven many individuals to append terms like Reddit to their search queries in search of authentic human discussions.
ChatGPT addresses some of these pain points by synthesizing information into a single, direct response rather than requiring individuals to navigate multiple external links. While the platform still struggles with occasional inaccuracies and the generation of incorrect answers, the immediate convenience continues to attract curious users.
While the latest metrics do not definitively prove how many AI queries have directly supplanted traditional Google searches, they demonstrate a clear shift in consumer behavior. Users are becoming increasingly comfortable relying on artificial intelligence for everyday information needs, signaling a subtle but significant evolution in how people discover content online.
