President Donald Trump congratulated Democrats for executing a strong campaign after the party inflicted severe defeats on his Republican allies, capturing both houses of Congress and securing several additional governors' mansions.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, the president declined to take personal accountability for a difficult night of losses for the GOP, which included setbacks in historically conservative regions. Trump stated that voters failed to recognize the economic advantages of his administration due to expensive gasoline.
Attributing high fuel costs directly to the conflict involving Iran, Trump continued to defend the American military campaign in the Middle East as an essential measure to stop the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons. Despite the unfavorable outcome, he expressed a willingness to collaborate with an opposition-led Congress if the Democrats showed similar interest.
Trump also highlighted the significant leverage a president holds regardless of congressional control, pointing specifically to his veto authority. He suggested that after rejecting legislation from the opposition, lawmakers would eventually seek compromises.
Addressing questions regarding his endorsement of specific Senate candidates who ultimately lost their races, Trump rejected the idea that he erred in his choices, while characterizing Texas Republican incumbent John Cornyn as disloyal.
Although Trump had urged voters during the final weeks of the campaign to treat the midterms as a referendum on his leadership, he maintained in the post-election interview that he did not view the results as a personal defeat since his name was not on the ballot.
