Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani will shortly announce a two-year service extension for Agniveers, according to senior government officials, indicating that the military recognizes their contributions and desires their continued presence in the ranks. Government representatives emphasized that choosing to remain in service will be entirely voluntary for each individual soldier.

The development arrives shortly before the three armed services were scheduled to begin releasing 75% of the inaugural batch of Agniveers in phased stages starting in mid-November. More than 18,300 military personnel were slated to leave the armed forces by December 31 upon concluding their initial four-year commitments.

Launched in 2022 to maintain a youthful and combat-ready military, the Agnipath recruitment framework has previously drawn political controversy for limiting the service duration of personnel below officer rank and restricting certain long-term benefits. The system recruits soldiers for a standard four-year duration, originally allowing just 25% of each cohort to transition into regular 15-year service.

The 18,300 service members facing discharge this year represent three-quarters of the 24,400 recruits inducted across the army, air force, and navy during the initial recruitment drive. Official records show the inaugural intake included roughly 19,000 personnel in the army, 2,850 in the air force, and 2,550 in the navy.

Military leadership across all three branches has expressed contentment regarding the operational performance of Agniveers across various duties. Officials previously indicated that the recruitment framework might undergo adjustments down the line to accommodate higher retention rates for individuals possessing specialized technical skills. Current operational figures show the army maintains approximately 270,000 Agniveers, while the air force and navy employ around 27,000 and 21,000 personnel, respectively.

The Agnipath initiative represented a significant break from traditional long-term military recruitment protocols when the National Democratic Alliance administration unveiled the policy in June 2022.
