NASA astronaut Anil Menon successfully cast his ballot for the U.S. midterm elections from aboard the International Space Station, turning his sleeping compartment into a temporary voting booth. Operating from more than 400 kilometers above the surface of the Earth, Menon completed an encrypted electronic ballot using an onboard computer.
Once filled out, the digital ballot traveled through NASA's specialized communications network to a ground station located in New Mexico. From there, the transmission was routed to Mission Control in Houston before being safely forwarded to local election authorities in Harris County, Texas.
Menon was among a trio of NASA astronauts who exercised their right to vote from orbit during the electoral event, maintaining the tradition of space-based civic participation enabled by specialized electronic voting procedures for orbital crew members.
