Elon Musk has responded publicly after Democrats swept control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, with NBC News projecting that the party will secure majorities in both the House and the Senate starting in January. The midterm results showed Democrats flipping seven Senate seats across Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas, alongside multiple governorships.

Reacting to the disappointing election night for the Republican Party, Musk poked fun at his substantial financial contributions on his social media platform. Musk reportedly spent approximately $250 million to support Republican congressional campaigns during the election cycle. In one post on X, he joked that his election-interfering space lasers had failed to work, and in a separate message, he quipped that data centers in space were looking appealing.

Among Musk's major financial investments was a high-profile race in Texas, where Republican candidate Ken Paxton ultimately lost the Senate contest to Democrat James Talarico. NBC News analysis further indicated that Democrats are on track to win at least 252 House seats, while also capturing governorships in states like Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Iowa.

President Donald Trump also addressed the midterm outcomes, declaring on Truth Social that he intends to transition into a political pundit to evaluate the factors behind candidate victories and defeats. Trump shared an image of a cap bearing the word veto, reflecting previous comments to CBS News where he emphasized his readiness to block Democratic legislation and embrace the title of Mr. Veto.

Trump maintained that his rigorous campaign tour, which featured dozens of massive rallies, helped generate enthusiasm and improve Republican prospects from earlier pessimistic forecasts. Meanwhile, associates of the president suggested that despite losing congressional majorities, the administration would retain significant authority next year regarding trade, border security, federal management, foreign policy, and national security.
