‘Paryavarana Parirakshana’ Sangham leader and Jyotirao Phule Backward Classes Association’s State president Beena Dhilli Rao on Monday requested the State government to take measures to mitigate the impact of cyclones in coastal areas such as Ichchapuram, Sompeta, Palasa and other places of North Andhra districts.Speaking to media in Sompeta of Srikakulam district, he urged the government declare Srikakulam district as “Special Cyclone Zone’ and take up remedial measures such as development of natural coastal defence shelter belts by protecting sand dunes, wetlands and development of mangrove forests in Ichchapuram, Sompeta, Palasa, Tekkali, Santhabommali, Kotabommali and other places of the districts. He has also sought permanent flood prevention measures such as desilting of canals, restoration of drainage systems, rejuvenation of ponds and wetlands in Sompeta and other places.Mr. Dhilli Rao asked the government to create a permanent early warning system to protect people from cyclones and floods while referring to inundation of thousands of houses and stranded people in Bahuda flood affected areas a few days ago.
Mr. Dhilli Rao requested the government to ensure compensation to farmers who lost their crops due to floods in the Bahuda river.Meanwhile, public life was thrown out of gear with the impact of the Murasu cyclone which caused heavy rainfall in different parts of the district.
The people who had horrible experiences with the impact of Arnab cyclone and floods to Vamsadhara, Bahuda and Nagavali one week ago were worried about the new cyclone.Srikakulam Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar and other officials reviewed the cyclone preparedness in various mandals in the district. The officials indicated that the new cyclone would have more impact on South Coastal areas of A.P. and there was no need to worry as its impact would be little in the district.
