The number of fatal accidents in Coimbatore has declined during the past 10 months compared to the same period in 2025, according to the Coimbatore City Police. While the city witnessed 231 fatal accidents from January to October in 2025, the number declined to 199 this year.According to the police, swift response of emergency services and immediate hospitalisation of the injured persons was one of the factors behind the decline in fatalities.Cashless emergency treatment up to ₹1,50,000, provided to accident victims under the Prime Minister – Road Accident Victims’ Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment (PM-RAHAT) scheme has encouraged the admission of victims to the nearest hospital.

This has helped in ensuring immediate medical intervention to the victims without much delay. Earlier, victims were primarily taken to the nearest government hospitals, said the police.Meanwhile, the increase in non-fatal accidents from 745 in 2025 to 818 this year was attributed to various factors, including increased awareness among the public on claiming motor vehicle and accidental insurance coverage.“In many of these non-fatal accidents, the affected persons suffer very minor injuries.

However, they lodge complaints to get cases registered for claiming insurance for damages to vehicles,” said a police officer.Since victims in many accidents are pedestrians, police personnel feel that lack of proper footpaths along city roads and absence of safe pedestrian crossing infrastructure on busy roads like Avinashi Road continue to be major concerns.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S.S. Maheswaran said the police had identified 59 locations as accident black spots, after analysing five-year data.

Caution boards had been placed at those locations, which also include two stretches of the Neelambur bypass that fall within the jurisdiction of the city police. Published - November 02, 2026 10:28 pm IST
