Mercedes-Benz is expanding its luxury electric vehicle lineup in India with the upcoming debut of the GLC Electric. The new battery-powered SUV will be assembled locally at the automaker's manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, and will initially be offered in the 400 4MATIC configuration.
The electric SUV measures 4,845mm in length, 1,913mm in width, and 1,644mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 2,972mm. This extended wheelbase provides an additional 47mm of rear legroom compared to the internal combustion version. The vehicle offers 570 litres of boot space, expandable to 1,740 litres by folding the rear seats down, alongside a 128-litre front luggage compartment and a kerb weight of 2,535kg.
Inside the cabin, the primary focal point is the expansive 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, which consolidates the digital instrument cluster, central infotainment display, and front passenger screen into a single continuous panel. Powered by the fourth-generation MBUX system with artificial intelligence integration from Microsoft and Google, the virtual assistant supports advanced multi-turn conversations and navigation inquiries through Google Cloud. The interior also features a SKY CONTROL panoramic roof with switchable glass technology that can alternate between transparent and opaque settings while illuminating 162 integrated stars.
Safety and driver assistance are managed by the MB.DRIVE suite, which gathers inputs from up to 10 external cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to provide adaptive cruise control, lane-change assistance, steering support, and automated parking. Additionally, buyers can select an optional Vegan Package featuring interior materials certified by The Vegan Society.
Underneath the body, the India-spec GLC 400 4MATIC utilizes a 94kWh NMC battery pack connected to a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout generating a combined 489 horsepower and 800Nm of torque. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in a claimed 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210kmph. Mercedes-Benz states the vehicle can deliver a maximum WLTP driving range of up to 715km depending on driving conditions and specifications.
Built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, the GLC Electric supports DC fast charging at up to 330kW, allowing the battery to replenish from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes. A brief 10-minute charging session can restore up to 305km of range under optimal conditions. An 11kW AC charger comes standard, with an optional 22kW AC charger available.
For ride comfort and agility, the model is equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension and intelligent suspension control. An optional rear-wheel steering system turns the rear wheels by up to 4.5 degrees, shrinking the turning circle from 12.1 metres to 11.2 metres for enhanced manoeuvrability. The vehicle also incorporates a One-Box braking system capable of up to 300kW of recuperation, alongside a dedicated TERRAIN mode and a transparent-bonnet function that utilizes camera views to display terrain directly beneath the front of the SUV.
