A 27-year-old man died after the car in which he was travelling reportedly plunged into a pond at Nathayyapalem, near KIMS Hospital, within the limits of the Gajuwaka police station limits, in the early hours of Monday.According to preliminary reports, K. Varun Kumar, a resident of Marripalem, was travelling from Sheela Nagar towards Kurmannapalem, where he had reportedly purchased a new flat, when the accident occurred.

The car is suspected to have veered off the road and plunged into the pond. The incident came to light only on Monday morning when a few walkers noticed the submerged car and alerted the authorities. Police and other personnel rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations.

The vehicle was subsequently pulled out of the water, and Varun’s body was retrieved. The accident has once again brought the poor condition of the Sheela Nagar–Tunglam road, which connects Kurmannapalem and Duvvada, into focus. Local residents alleged that the stretch was in a deplorable condition, with damaged roads, inadequate road width and lack of street lighting at several places.

They said that the pond did not have a proper protective boundary wall, posing a serious risk to motorists travelling along the narrow road, particularly during the night.Hundreds of vehicles use the stretch daily as it connects important residential and industrial areas. Residents said that the situation reportedly worsens during the rainy season, when parts of the road become inundated, making it difficult for motorists to identify the road edges and navigate the stretch safely.Gajuwaka police have registered a case.
