Officials of the Department of Mines and Minerals on Monday seized a lorry transporting gravel without valid permit near Alangulam in Tenkasi district.According to the officials, the lorry was carrying gravel from a quarry to an undisclosed destination. As it was crossing Aithaankattalai village near Alangulam around 1.30 p.m., they intercepted the vehicle.
When they checked its records, they found that no permit had been issued to transport gravel. Hence, they seized the lorry with the gravel.“The officials should investigate further to identify the quarry from which the mineral was lifted.
If the quarry had mined the mineral without valid permission and sent it by lorry without a valid pass, its licence should be cancelled,” said S. Jameen., an office-bearer of District Iyarkaivala Paathukaappu Sangam. Most of the stone quarries in Tenkasi district are prime suppliers of stones, blue metal and M-Sand at exorbitant prices to Keralam even after the Tamil Nadu Government’s ban on transport of minor minerals to other States, officials said.
