A trail of suspicious bank transactions in Guwahati has led the Assam Police to a well-organised financial fraud network that is suspected to have links with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). Six people have been arrested so far, with investigators suspecting that the syndicate has defrauded victims of several crores of rupees using multiple mule bank accounts. The investigation began after the Special Task Force (STF) received intelligence inputs from central agencies, including Military Intelligence (MI), about an organised financial fraud racket operating through mule bank accounts.

Assam Police subsequently lodged a complaint at the STF, following which a case was registered and an investigation initiated.A preliminary examination of financial transactions brought an SBI account belonging to Marjina Begum, an accused named in the FIR and a resident of Ganesh Nagar under Chandmari police station limits in Guwahati, under scrutiny.Investigators found that the account had received credits amounting to lakhs of rupees within just 47 days, between June 22 and August 5, 2026. What raised further suspicion was the pattern of withdrawals.

The amounts deposited into the account were withdrawn almost immediately after each credit. Further investigation revealed the involvement of Mofijul Haque, 22, and Himangshu Das, 19, both residents of Guwahati, in suspicious financial transactions linked to the account.

Preliminary findings also indicated a suspected connection with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative.Acting on the findings, the Assam STF launched an operation on October 28 and arrested Marjina Begum, Mofijul Haque and Himangshu Das. Mobile phones and incriminating documents were recovered from their possession during the operation.During interrogation, Mofijul Haque and Himangshu Das disclosed the names of several other people suspected to be associated with the racket, according to officials.

Following these leads, the STF continued its operation and arrested three more people over the next two days.On October 29, Rakib Hussain, 34, was arrested from his residence and two days later, the STF arrested two more accused -- Iftar Hussain, 25, and Arman Azuz Hoque, 20.With these arrests, the total number of people held in connection with the case has risen to six.During the raids, investigators seized mobile phones, laptops, electronic gadgets, bank passbooks, ATM cards and various incriminating documents from the arrested accused.Investigators suspect that the organised financial fraud syndicate has been operating across different parts of the country for approximately two years, using multiple mule bank accounts to facilitate fraudulent financial transactions.Preliminary findings suggest that the network has allegedly defrauded victims of several crores of rupees. The suspected mastermind is believed to be coordinating and controlling the activities of other members from outside Assam. The investigators are examining the network of bank accounts allegedly used by the syndicate and tracing the movement of the fraudulent funds to establish the extent of its operations.Apart from identifying the remaining members of the alleged financial fraud network, the STF is investigating the suspected links with Pakistan-based Intelligence Operatives and other anti-national elements. The agency is working to trace the flow of fraudulent funds, identify additional mule bank accounts and apprehend other members of the syndicate.Investigators are also seeking to establish the nature and extent of the suspected involvement of Pakistan Intelligence Operatives in the racket.- Ends
