The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers’ Protection Association has urged the State government to implement the Vetri Magalir Goat Rearing Scheme only in villages which have pastures for grazing.Welcoming the State government’s decision to provide five goats or sheep will be provided with a 100% subsidy to destitute widows, deserted women, transgender persons, and persons with disabilities living in rural areas, benefiting about 30,000 eligible persons at a cost of ₹110 crore, Swamimalai Vimalnathan, secretary of the association, said there was no doubt the scheme would help improve the economic condition of women farm labourers in the villages.Though villages in ancient days had pastoral lands, they have now come under encroachments and there was no place for cattle to graze in many villages. Steps should be taken to recover such poromboke lands.
Otherwise, the goats would feed on crops and farms leading to fights. Hence, Mr.
Swamimalai urged the government not to implement the scheme in villages which do not have pastures for grazing. Published - November 04, 2026 07:11 pm IST
