The new development eliminated the previous necessity of relying on other ports for the arrival of goods. Beyond reducing the time and costs associated with cargo movement, it ensures that revenue generated from sectors like cargo handling and logistics remains within the State. The new facility will also create significant employment opportunities in southern districts—including Thiruvananthapuram—across sectors such as customs brokerage, freight forwarding, transportation, warehousing, and port operations.
This also marks a crucial step in the port’s evolution: moving beyond mere transshipment activities to becoming a facility that directly serves importers in Kerala.Speaking at the reception ceremony, M. Vincent, MLA, said the commencement of import operations within just three months of the Chief Minister inaugurating the ‘gateway traffic’ is a remarkable feat.
The region’s developmental aspirations could be realised when both exports and imports are strengthened, he said.He also said that by channeling goods from various parts of South India through Vizhinjam, Vizhinjam can truly become a gateway for India’s development. The strengthening of container movement and inland freight transport will pave the way for the arrival of logistics companies, the growth of allied industries, and development within the hospitality and transport sectors. As Vizhinjam hosted an event to receive the first inbound import cargo to the State, the occasion turned into a memorable milestone for two young women entrepreneurs from Thiruvananthapuram.
They brought in the container of building materials from China, marking the arrival of the first import consignment at Vizhinjam International Seaport. The container, carrying WPC foam boards for the Alteir Group, was brought to the port by Gouri Devanand and Greeshma Devanand, who led BS2G Logistics and Ship Chandlers Pvt. Ltd..
Headquartered in the UAE, BS2G has been involved in financial facilitation and logistics across West Asia. As Vizhinjam opened its doors for EXIM trade based in Keralam, they decided to bring their experience to Keralam.
According to the BS2G team, the shipment demonstrates the viability of the route, with more imports already being arranged through the port.WPC foam boards have been gaining popularity among architects and interior designers because of their resistance to moisture and termites, making them particularly suitable for Kerala’s damp, monsoon-heavy climate. They are also lightweight, easy to cut and install, and can accommodate paint, laminates, and veneers.
These properties make them suitable for a range of applications, including modular kitchens, wardrobes, partitions, false ceilings, wall cladding and signage. As they can serve as an alternative to natural timber, their use can also help reduce pressure on forest resources, they said, adding that anyone with questions on export, import or customs clearance is welcome to walk in their office, and the team will be glad to help.
