Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has disbursed Rs 15.68 crore in financial subsidies to the creators of 224 motion pictures, providing a timely holiday boost to the regional entertainment sector. Unveiled during a gathering in the Chepauk neighborhood of Chennai, the initiative successfully unlocked monetary grants that had reportedly remained stalled for a span of seven years. Every participating filmmaker in the chosen cohort was awarded an individual check amounting to Rs 7 lakh.
Prominent filmmaker T Siva of Amma Creations publicly commended the administration, extending his appreciation to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay alongside Minister Rajmohan Arumugam for facilitating the disbursement. In a statement shared on social media, Siva characterized the official announcement as an encouraging festive present for everyone tied to the cinematic trade. He expressed profound gratitude to the state leadership for swiftly clearing the substantial package, noting that it restores optimism and offers a renewed start for the affected production houses.
The industry veteran emphasized that the state assistance functions as far more than a standard rebate, serving as a critical lifeline for numerous households reliant on cinematic ventures. He noted that the vast majority of recipients are professionals who previously suffered severe financial setbacks or lost their primary incomes due to filmmaking investments, making the aid a vital catalyst for personal and professional recovery. The approved motion pictures span a production window between 2015 and 2022, selected via formal recommendations delivered by an evaluation panel led by retired Justice SK Krishnan.
The support program is structured to bolster the creation of economically modest Tamil productions, especially those focusing on pressing societal themes. During the ceremony, Minister Rajmohan highlighted classic cinematic works that successfully confronted deep-rooted social problems, commending creators who choose meaningful storytelling over purely commercial formulas. Additionally, the minister announced that state-level honors for regional cinema will henceforth be awarded strictly on the grounds of fairness and integrity.
