RAJESH Residents of Thuppaspatti and Ayyanarpuram in the district on Monday submitted a petition to the Collector, seeking closure of a newly opened Tasmac outlet and an ‘llegal’ recreation club nearby. The petition was submitted at the weekly grievance redressal meeting chaired by Collector Vishu Mahajan. In their petition, the villagers said the Tasmac outlet and the club in Thuppaspatti-Ayyanarpuram area under Keela Arasadi panchayat were causing several problems.
Also, while staging continuous protests demanding the closure of both outlets, anti-social elements were issuing death threats to the protesters. The petitioners said that drunken people made it a regular practice to engage in quarrels in nearby thickets, break and throw liquor bottles and lie around in an intoxicated state. This raised serious safety concerns among women, who left for work at the salt pans early in the morning, and school students passing through the area. The residents urged the authorities to permanently shut down the Tasmac outlet and the recreation club, which were causing inconvenience to the public, and take stringent action against those threatening and intimidating the villagers. In a separate petition, Sudalai of Meelavittan and other villagers said that 70 goats died after allegedly consuming wastewater discharged from a fertilizer godown owned by a private company at Veeranayakkanthattu near Thoothukudi.
The animals had been grazing in the area. They sought criminal action against the godown management and adequate compensation for the loss of goats. Published - November 02, 2026 07:43 pm IST
