Shivakumar said the Union government cannot turn a blind eye to the violation of E20 norms and blend more ethanol, thereby imposing a financial burden on ordinary citizens. âReduced mileage, potential vehicle damage and rising maintenance costs are concerns that deserve serious attention.
It is unacceptable that consumers bear the cost while oil companies continue to report substantial profits,â he said.Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara said the âModi-led government had already forced E20 petrol on the people, despite serious concerns over reduced mileage, additional fuel expenses and compatibility with older vehicles,â and the findings by the Department of Legal Metrology, Karnataka, were even more alarming. He called the BJP-led Union governmentâs claim that an ethanol blend of petrol would help farmers a âdouble standardâ. âIt [the BJP-led Union government] claims that ethanol blending benefits farmers, yet it has now excluded ethanol made from sugarcane juice, sugar syrup and B-heavy molasses from its latest procurement tender.
At a time when Karnatakaâs farmers are already suffering from severe drought, the Centre is restricting an important market for sugarcane-based ethanol while allowing petrol to be sold with ethanol levels far beyond the prescribed limit. Where is the promised benefit to farmers?
Where is the protection for motorists? Is this not deceiving both farmers and consumers?â he asked.Mr.
Parameshwara said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari owe the people an explanation. He demanded âan immediate investigation, strict action against those responsible, transparent disclosure of ethanol content at every petrol pump and necessary safeguards for consumersâ.
