St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda — India has announced the extension of a $500 million line of credit dedicated to funding roads, health, and defense initiatives in Guyana. The announcement was made as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali in Antigua and Barbuda.

Mr. Jaishankar arrived in St. John's for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where he met with President Ali on the sidelines of the summit. Following the discussion, the External Affairs Minister noted on social media that the talks involved a review of the steady advancement in bilateral cooperation, particularly building on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit in 2024.

According to an official statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders explored avenues to deepen collaboration across several strategic sectors of mutual interest. These discussions encompassed trade, investment, energy, agriculture, infrastructure development, digital technology, and capacity building. Highlighting the financial commitment, Mr. Jaishankar formally announced the $500 million credit extension aimed at bolstering Guyana's infrastructure and defense capabilities.

The Ministry noted that India has previously completed multiple development projects in Guyana, and this latest credit facility is intended to reinforce the ongoing partnership between the two nations. Alongside the financial commitment, both governments formalized three separate agreements during the meeting.

The newly signed pacts include arrangements for the supply and installation of manufacturing projects for Micro and Small Enterprises, as well as grant assistance designated for implementing Quick Impact Projects. An additional agreement establishes cooperation in the realm of Digital Public Infrastructure and the eventual establishment of a Unified Payments Interface-style payment system within Guyana.

India and Guyana maintain deep-rooted bilateral ties grounded in shared history, cultural connections, and people-to-people bonds, operating collectively as both Commonwealth members and Global South partners. The Ministry affirmed that both nations remain committed to expanding their multifaceted relationship and pursuing mutual goals for economic development and regional prosperity. Earlier during his visit, Mr. Jaishankar participated in a joint breakfast meeting with Commonwealth heads of government and business leaders, where he encouraged partner nations to focus on de-risking and diversifying their economic strategies.
