Traders and hawkers in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas staged a 'rail roko protest' against a statewide eviction drive. Following an eviction notice in Gobardanga, affected vendors, including women and elderly individuals, laid on the railway tracks, demanding a rehabilitation package or an alternative location to continue their businesses. The protesters stated that the eviction threatens their livelihoods, which they have maintained at the station for decades. The government maintains that proper notices were served prior to the action. Railway Protection Force personnel removed the protesters from the tracks, allowing train services to resume. Similar eviction drives have recently taken place at Sealdah, Howrah, and Dum Dum railway stations.
